Bree

“What did I do?” I whisper to myself.

I don’t recognize the person in the mirror. The full-face of makeup, the red lipstick, and the hair flowing past my shoulders belong to someone who’s not me. Chloe rocks this look, but I feel weird. I almost trip on the stilettos on my feet as I head to the door. It’s taking me so long to get from point A to B in these death traps and body contouring dress.

Jason knocks again.

“Coming!” I yell, then take a deep breath to calm the nerves firing through my body.

I have no idea what Jason is going to think, but part of me hopes he hates it, so I can take off these shoes. Bracing for impact, I swing open the door. Jason’s greeting dies on his lips as he makes a confused face. His eyes start at my feet, roam up my legs, pause at my ample cleavage, and back to my face. I wobble on my heels as I step aside to allow him entry.

Once he enters, he spins to look at me again. I fidget because his expressions is stuck between amused and confused. Finally, he speaks after a sigh.

“What’s going on, Bree?”

“Um…I’m practicing for new year, new me?”

His eyes are almost brown as he looks downward with a head shake.

“God, I hope not.”

My cheeks flush with embarrassment. “What do you mean by that?”

“First, I can’t take you serious with those shoes.” Jason steps in my space and grabs my hands. “I’ll hold you steady; you remove those damn things before you break an ankle.”

I comply and his demeanor softens a little.

“Come with me,” he orders as he tugs me to my bedroom. Moving me in front of the mirror above my vanity, he stands behind me with his hands on my shoulders. “Do you like what you see?”

“My makeup is flawless, a professional did it.”

Jason shakes his head then meets my eyes in the mirror. “But, do you like it? Does it make you feel bolder, more beautiful, sexier?”

“No. I just see me with makeup. I’m not used to wearing makeup.”

“Jason smiles at me. Does it have the opposite effect? Are you uncomfortable right now?”

“Yes,” I admit.

Reaching over me, he plucks a few makeup wipes from the packet and presses them into my palm.

“Then you don’t need it. Makeup is supposed to enhance your beauty. If you don’t feel enhanced, then don’t bother.”

“But,” I sputter. “People…”

“People can suck my dick. You’re never supposed to wear makeup to receive validation from others. They should take you on your good and bad days, Bree. You’re beautiful without this crap, it’s just extraneous nonsense.”

I withhold a pout as I raise the wipe to my face. Jason stops me with his hand over mine.

“I want to be clear; my opinion doesn’t matter here. If you want to wear it, wear it. But if you’re doing this only because we’re going back in public together, then it’s not a good reason.”

“I’m not a lesbian, Jason.”

“First, there’s plenty of makeup wearing lesbians.
