“How’s school, sweetheart?” my dad asked, his face pinched with concern as he studied me on the other side of the kitchen island. I’d arrived before Landon to avoid any suspicion, even if he had dropped me off at the corner and gone to drive around for a bit.

Apparently public transportation was a thing of my past if Landon had his way now that we were more.

I still didn’t know what to call it, because calling my father’s best friend that I was sleeping with my boyfriend seemed a little too juvenile. Especially considering the way we’d started.

He was just…mine. In a way I’d never expected. In a way I didn’t even want to admit to myself.

“It’s fine. Some of my classes are kicking me in the butt. I’ll manage,” I said the moment he rounded on me like he might try to tell me I didn’t need a degree to work for him and Uncle Landon.

I wanted to earn my way. I wanted to feel like I belonged there and not like I was just the entitled daughter of one of the owners. Their company had a pristine reputation for excellence and for being a great place to work. Techies all over the country applied for their internships and entry-level positions because of the opportunity for growth.

I didn’t want to take that from someone if I wasn’t actually qualified.

“You know Landon and I can teach you everything you need to know,” he sighed, hating the thought of me living on campus and surrounded by people my age who lived the typical party life. That had never been me, though, and never would be for the sake of my social awkwardness and not knowing what the hell to say to people when they tried to talk to me.

Unless I was comfortable with the people around me, I was mostly quiet. That didn’t lend itself to being the life of the party, and the thought of Landon allowing me to go out drinking with friends made me snort.

Maybe if he was there to supervise, but that just seemed awkward. Hanging out with my friends my age and my significant other who was over twice my age?

Pass.

“I need to get my degree, Dad. It’s important to me,” I protested, my body jolting in place as the front door opened behind me. There was no doubt who it would be, considering I’d told him not to come until at least ten minutes had passed. A quick glance at the clock confirmed he’d waited ten on the dot, making me huff a disbelieving breath.

“Something smells good,” he said by way of greeting, stepping into the kitchen. He took the seat on the stool next to me like he normally would, leaning over to give me a kiss on the cheek.

Could my dad see the way his touch lingered? The way my breath hitched the moment his lips touched my skin?

God, I fucking hoped not.

I forced myself to smile casually, murmuring softly, “Hey, Uncle Landon.”

“You look tired,” he said, his mouth twitching with the desire to smile.
