When you get a good idea write it down or you will lose it. In other words, don’t put money in a pocket with a hole in it.

That airport kid was a genius, and the moment of inspiration he gave me was the special tagline of dialogue that captured Joey Pigza’s unique voice: “Can I get back to you on that?” Once again, my Writing Radar was fully turned on and I was inspired and I wrote it down. I wasn’t about to let something that juicy get away from me.

These days I can’t go to a school and speak to kids without a student prancing by me while yelling out, “Can I get back to you on that?” Or they raise their hands after a presentation and when I call on them they gleefully yell out, “Can I get back to you on that?”

The lesson here, of course, is that if I didn’t write down what had inspired me I may have lost that great moment when Joey flew out of his desk and down the hall. I may have let it fade away. And then that great tagline of “Can I get back to you on that?” wouldn’t have meant anything to me. And I never would have written five Joey Pigza books__books that I think contain some of my best writing.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think of Joey, and believe me, my Writing Radar is always on and I’m always on the hunt for inspiration.

So keep your Writing Radar on full alert because when inspiration strikes it may be the most important first step to grabbing your journal and fulfilling the oath you made__the oath that you will work hard to achieve your dream of seeing a book on a shelf with your name running down the spine. (That is the true meaning of spine-tingling!)

You want that feeling. I know you do.
