NO SHOCKING OR WITTY DIALOGUE HOOKS:

“Brandon, did you leave the milk container out on the table again?” Mom shouted.

I know I shouldn’t have yelled at him like I’d done, but he always knows how to make me mad.

“Brittany, I’d like to introduce you to Sharon.”

After reading the powerful examples of internal or external Surprising or Shocking Dialogue that we’ve examined in this section, can you see the difference between the openings that strongly engage versus these last three examples? The last three sentences do contain hooks, but very few, and, if given your choice to choose only one book to read, would you choose one from the last three sentences (knowing nothing else about the story) or from one of the earlier examples?
