Hector takes the wheel of her despised old Ford, circling around DeRivera Park, then once again heading up Catawba toward The Casino.

As they pass by Krutch’s suspected base, Verity leans over for a better look through the rain streaked glass. “Dark and no cars … no dog,” she says redundantly.

Standing in line to enter the dancehall, they overhear a greeter opine to another patron, “This Saturday? Absolute last crossing this season. Ask me, this might be the White Hurricane of thirteen, all over again. Figure soon enough, we’ll have full ice and it’ll lock in place through the New Year. Should I put you down for evergreen duty?”

Hector says softly to his island lover, “What in God’s name is evergreen duty?”

Verity squeezes his hand. “They use discarded Christmas trees to mark the safest path for the ice boats you mentioned earlier. They race them, and even move some goods with them if the ice seems thick enough to bear the extra weight.”

She runs fingers back through her rain-kissed hair. “Maybe we should be packing, instead of dawdling here. When everyone is saying the same thing—the weather is closing in like some hound of heaven—we’re surely fools not to listen. Seems something dumber than stubbornness to deny it.”

“Christ, don’t get me started,” Hector says. “I’d leave tonight if the ferries were still running’ at this hour.”

Hector suddenly sees the familiar vehicle hulking yonder. He nods in its direction, says, “Look over there, but subtle-like. That’s Krutch’s car. Makes sense he’d be this side of the street if he’s truly what we think he is. Has to go where people are to find fresh pickin’s, right?”

Hector sees no sign of Krutch standing in the falling drizzle with them. He lets go of Verity’s hand, says, “In case he hasn’t yet fully linked us, you and I can’t be seen together like this by that man. You know that.”

A tone of real disappointment: “So you’re saying dancing is scratched?”

“At least in this joint,” Hector says. “But there’s an opportunity here, right now. I’m going to sneak in, make sure he’s indeed in there, and try to do that without Krutch seein’ me.”

Verity scowls. “And if he is inside and doesn’t see you? Then what, Hec?”

“You get in your car right now. Stay low, out of sight. Watch that door. Hopefully, you’ll see me come out and cross the street to search his house. If Krutch comes out of this place, let him get to the far side of the road, then you give a couple of short blasts of your car horn to tip me he’s coming. After you hit that horn, you best duck way down in case he goes looking for the horn’s source. One other thing, Ver—I’ve stowed a gun under your front passenger’s seat. It’s my second, back up gun. It’s ready to fire. Just cock the hammer and point her like a finger. Don’t worry about aiming more than shooting for the center of the chest.”

Wide-eyed, she murmurs, “I’m terrified now, you know.
