Chapter 20

Skip’s guys from the medical examiner’s office had arrived to remove the bodies. Buckley had said that he’d gotten everything he needed from the scene and moved up to the eighth floor to get started there. The rest of our group had moved to the lobby. There was no point in us sitting and watching the guys load the remains. We’d seen enough of that to know what it looked like.

“You talked to everyone?” I asked.

“Everyone who answered,” Burns said. “No one knows anyone named Nick Kline, Dan Rathmussen, or Jack Faris on that floor.”

“And we can’t get any video of the hallways?” I asked.

“No cameras in the halls,” Malone said. He scratched at the back of his short dark spiked hair. “Which is damn convenient for our killer.”

“Who is managing this place right now?” I asked.

“The manager on duty is a guy named Rob Lentley. We spoke with him briefly,” Chestnut said.

“We’re going to need to talk with him some more,” Dave said. “Go round him up.”

“Sure,” Chestnut said. He walked from our spot in the lobby, near the elevators, and disappeared down the hall.

“How did the talk with the housekeeper go?” I asked.

“She basically repeated what she told us on the phone when she called in,” Malone said. “Not too much more to offer up. The guy, Faris, hit on her, and when she turned down his advance, he said some smart-ass thing to her about being a janitor and walked off. And this of course took place in the hallway by the pool area, back around the corner where they don’t have any video. We’ll get that subpoena for additional footage sometime today, but I’m not sure what good it’s going to do us. We won’t be able to track him back to a room or floor. With this place not having cameras in the halls, the only thing we’d really be able to get is him in the lobby or by the pool.”

“Or one of these guys by the front desk checking in,” Dave said. “Think about it. Even if the room isn’t in any of their names, you’d have to think that one of them would be in the lobby when whoever booked the room checked in and got the room keys.”

“That’s if they were staying here,” I said. “We still don’t have anything concrete that says they were.”

“True,” Dave said.

“What happened with the other call-ins from last night? You said there was another from here and one from the Dolphin next door, right?”

“It ended up being two from here, besides the maid, and one from the Dolphin,” Malone said.

“Okay. Anything?” I asked.

Malone shook his head but reached into the inner pocket of his gray suit jacket.

“The two from here”—Malone stared down at his notepad—“Lance Merick and Meghan Bolling claimed to have seen Faris here. Now, this may not be entirely accurate. The Meghan woman said she recognized the tattoo from a guy that she was next to at the bar. Which we now know could have been one of three people.
