Nick roared up as soon as the gates shut, and she sighed as she sank gratefully into the Porsche’s leather-backed seats. “Thank God. I don’t think I could have kept that up much longer.”

“Are you okay? Did anything happen?” He cast a worried gaze over her.

“I’m fine. Milo’s a bit thrown that I left, but luckily Felix walked in and gave me the perfect opportunity.”

“Felix was there?”

“Yep, and he wasn’t at all happy Milo had brought me home. If they killed Jacob, it was on his order.”

Nick exhaled. “You think that’s possible?”

“I don’t know. There’s nothing to indicate they had anything to do with his death.” Yet. She set her purse on her lap.

“You didn’t find anything?” She didn’t miss the disappointment in his voice.

“I found a couple of things in his desk drawer,” she told him. “But I haven’t had a chance to look at them yet.”

He glanced sideways at her. “What things?”

“A phone, some business cards. Let me take a look when I get home, and we can talk tomorrow.”

“Okay.” He was tired, she could tell, and she didn’t blame him. The poor guy had been sitting in his car the whole time she and Milo were at dinner and the club, then he’d followed her back to the house.

“Thank you, Nick,” She leaned across and squeezed his arm. “It was reassuring knowing you were there.”

“You’re welcome.” He looked slightly mollified. “Glad to be of service, although I don’t think I could ever be a cop. Stakeouts are so incredibly boring.”

She laughed. “Point taken. But thank you. I mean it.”

He nodded. “Call me tomorrow.”

“I will.”

She watched as he turned the car around and drove off, then walked up the path to her front door.
