CHAPTER 17

FINN

AFTER I FINISH explaining to Jamison how he got the thorn stuck in his foot and then infection set in and how he spent a countless number of days in his cot practically knocking on death’s door before Rose crash-landed on our island, Jamison spends the next ten minutes or so in silence, trying to process everything.

He runs his hand through his hair that used to make all the girls swoon back in the day. Even though it’s much longer now, the bastard still pulls off the look like he’s been rocking it his entire life. And even I have to admit he looks pretty damn good for a dead man. It’s no wonder Rose hasn’t been able to stop staring at him since we got back.

I thought our little ménage à trois in the lagoon would have had her falling for both Gunner and me.

But no woman has ever been able to resist J’s charm and good looks. Time and time again every girl I’ve ever known has either used me to get to Jamison or went running straight for him.

There’s a reason he’s been called People’s Sexiest Man Alive and why he gets the lead in every movie he’s ever auditioned for.

Hell, even a year on this fucking island and him being sick and bedridden for weeks haven’t taken away from his good looks.

“Lucky son-of-a-bitch,” I grumble under my breath.

Jamison looks up from his thoughtful, serious stare. “What?”

“Nothing,” I say with a shake of my head. “It’s good to have you back,” I say, and I mean that. I can’t imagine a life without Jamison in it. Even though we butt heads a lot, I wouldn’t trade him for any other person on this planet. He’s my best friend. We’ve been through a ton of shit together and always made it out on the other side, stronger because of it.

“It’s good to be back,” he says with a smile that would put toothpaste commercial models to shame…and the dude hasn’t even properly brushed his teeth for over a year.

Shaking my head, I spare a glance at Rose. She still looks like she’s in a little bit of shock over Jamison’s recovery. “You okay?” I ask her.

“Yeah. I’m…fine. I’m just…” Her voice trails off as tears fill her blue eyes.

I start to stand, but then I see Jamison reaching for her hand, which she gladly takes. Closing my eyes, I sit back down on my cot, internalizing my struggle with seeing the two of them together.

Jealousy. That’s the only emotion I can manage to muster right now. I’ve felt this many, many times before with Jamison…but it’s never been over a woman that has grown so dear to my heart in such a short amount of time.

I ball my hands into fists and keep them hidden beside my thighs. I refuse to act out right now and risk scaring Rose away…and right into his arms. Besides, Jamison is alive and well. This should be a moment of rejoicing. For all of us.
