Chapter Six

Michael sat quietly in the cab of his mate's beautiful truck. The thing looked and smelled brand new. He wondered just how long Cam had had it and what it would be like to be actually able to afford a car, let alone drive one. Michael had only had three driving lessons when he was younger before his father had put a stop to that. He had no idea why his dad didn't let him get his license or finish school; the only explanation Michael could come up with was the fact the man was a bastard. Learning to drive was just something else he added to the ever-growing list of things he wanted to achieve to get his life on track.

He wondered what Cam's reaction would be when he found out that Michael couldn't even drive a car. Michael wasn't even sure if Patricia and George knew he couldn't, since the subject had never really come up. He supposed he would just have to wait and see. Cam would either help him or walk away because Michael wasn't worth the effort. He was expecting the latter, so he'd decided to try to soak up as much time with Cam as he could before he was no longer in Michael's life.

Michael gave the directions to the parking lot where they could leave the car and head to where their sleuth usually gathered for meetings. He supposed he could have just directed Cam back to the Packard house and they could have taken off into the woods behind the property, but Michael wanted his mate all to himself and he knew if he took Cam back there, Patricia would start in with the third degree. The woman was extremely good at extracting information from people and could have easily had a job as an interrogator for the police force. Patricia and George had returned back to their house earlier in the day after they'd received the all clear from the inspector that morning letting them know the building was safe to live in.

There were a couple of other cars in the parking lot when they arrived, one, a late nineties model Ford, he recognized as belonging to an old school friend, Carson Brooks. They had been good friends before Michael had been forced to drop out. Since then they only saw each other at the gatherings and with Michael's father being the ass he was, Carson had kept his distance. Even though his dad and older brother had been gone for a few months now, Michael hadn't yet tried to rekindle any of the friendships he'd had when he was younger. He wanted to get his life in order first.

They got out of the car and Michael heard the locks click into place. Cam stood at the front of his truck and held out his hand for Michael. Michael smiled a little and hurried to take his mate's hand. Cam's large hand felt like it swallowed Michael's whole. His mate had calluses on his palm and the rough hard patches felt odd against his own smooth, soft skin.
