CHAPTER 11

Elena

“What the fuck is that?” Nik asks.

“Just the columns for our bed,” I say, turning to face him. A group of moving guys is outside, bringing in my things from the largest moving van I could order. I have a lot of stuff, so sue me. A couple of the men walk past Nik and me in the foyer, carrying gold-colored columns.

“For our bed? Princess, I already own a bed.”

I sniff. “Well, I don’t like your bed, so we’re bringing in mine.”

“Your bed that has columns attached to it,” he says, eyeing another column being brought in.

“I’m a princess, aren’t I?”

He smiles, shaking his head. “You got me there.”

“Round two goes to me,” I say, holding up two fingers.

“Not so fast, princess. You can’t seriously be moving all your shit into the house. I don’t think we’ll have enough room.” He stares wide-eyed as one of the men carries in a large Greek-styled podium. “What the hell is that for?”

“First, my things are not shit. Two, I like to place my shoes on something fancy. Is that a problem?”

“Yes! You put your shoes on a Greek-inspired counter. That’s weird.”

I cross my arms. “I’m not the weird one, Nik. Your house literally has no color to it. I absolutely hate it. I mean, who has no color in their house? It’s insane. And weird.”

He makes a face. “At least I don’t have gaudy furniture.”

“It is not gaudy. It’s elegant.”

“Woah, not that.” He steps forward, blocking a moving guy from carrying in a marble bust of Elizabeth, our family dog from when I was a kid.

“Yes, that.” I tug Nik away from the door to let the man through. “Go ahead,” I say to him. The man shrugs, carrying the marble bust into the living room.

“Where do you want it?” he asks me.

“Just place it on the mantle,” I tell him.

“No,” Nik cuts in. “I’m not about to have a marble dog over my fireplace.”

“It’s called a bust,” I inform him, “and that dog is named Elizabeth. She was the most beautiful poodle ever created, and she died when I was only ten. My mom had that made for me, and I’ve kept it in my room ever since. Now, I’d like to have it here.”

Nik just looks at me like I’m crazy, though I know I’m not. He’s the crazy one for his monochromatic color scheme. “You have a marble bust of your dead pet dog?”

I shrug. “Why wouldn’t I?”

He pauses, opening and closing his mouth. I just wait for him to answer with one eyebrow raised. “Because,” he splutters, “because it’s just weird!”

“Oh, so you’ve never loved someone enough to have them memorialized forever as a marble bust?”

He squints. “I can’t tell if you’re joking.”

“Oh, for god’s sake,” I mutter, dropping my hands to my side. “You’re impossible, Nik. Since this is my home now, I’m trying to make it as much mine as it is yours. And yet, you can’t stop complaining when I add my touches to the house.
