The storm got bigger and bigger, and soon the mountain was a waterfall. Martín’s hands were all slippery, and he could barely hold on to Emma.

“He’s making things worse!” cried Nelli.

“I CAN’T HELP IT!” Tlaloc roared. “This is what happens when I get angry.”

“MAYBE WE CAN HELP!” Emma yelled back, and Martín would have rolled his eyes at his sister, because of course Emma thought she would be able to help a god. But he was too busy trying not to roll down the muddy slope to focus on anything other than not letting go of his sister.

“YOU ARE MERE MORTALS!” Tlaloc barked. “HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO HELP?”

“Maybe…” Emma made her voice louder. “MAYBE WE CAN HELP YOU FIND THE THIEF?”

“EXPLAIN!” Tlaloc yelled. Martín wished he wouldn’t yell so much. It was hard to think with such a loud roar ringing in his ears. But Emma knew how to keep her cool. That was one thing he definitely admired about his sister.

“CAN YOU CALM THE STORM DOWN?” she asked. “JUST A BIT SO WE CAN TALK?”

The storm cooled down just enough for them to be able to stand up and talk without yelling. They all took a breath and approached the grumbling Tlaloc.

“Okay, when did you first notice the lightning bolt was missing?” Emma asked. She scrunched up her eyes and put a finger on her chin. It was what she did anytime she was trying to solve a mystery.
