Though I had woken up an hour ago, I kept my eyes pinned shut. As I rested my head against the rattling window of Vicky’s car, the morning light threatened to break through the barrier of my stubbornness. I was curious where we were but wasn’t willing to open my eyes to see. Once she knew I was awake, I’d have to confront her about this stupid plan, and I was too angry to deal with it.

In the driver’s seat, Vicky was humming to some pop song, only pausing her boppy singalong to curse at slow eighteen wheelers driving in the fast lane. She seemed oddly...normal. I’d expected some sinister showdown or nefarious plot. Not a casual road trip with someone I used to consider a best friend.

I felt stuck in a limbo where I was angry…but also not angry at her for forcing me to go with her. Yes, my head hurt like a bitch, and she could have been a little less forceful about it. But driving toward Miami—toward Anthony—still felt like a win.

I was out of Kansas City. I was headed toward Anthony. It had been weeks since I’d seen him, and even though it made me sick to my stomach to sit beside Vicky in her car, I was looking forward to the destination—as foolish as it was. This could have all been a trap, but something in my gut told me that it wasn’t.

I just couldn’t imagine what Malice and William were going through right now. It was only a matter of time before they realized I was gone, and I feared the repercussions on Vicky’s behalf.

“Are you going to stop pretending to be asleep? I have to stop at a gas station, and I need to make sure you’re not going to run away,” Vicky asked in a bored tone. “I already gave you one nasty bump on the head, and I really don’t want to do that again.” She paused, and I waited for her to continue, not quite willing to give up my napping ruse yet. “Or maybe I do want to give you another bump on the head.” She started laughing, and I felt the car slow down. The clicking blinker turned on as she exited whatever highway we were on.

“I don’t need another bump on the head. I didn’t really need the first one,” I groaned before blinking the sleep away and sitting up. The bright light of day made my eyes burn.

“I didn’t really have time to convince you,” she argued.

We passed a sign that said Tennessee. “You know how determined my brothers can be. I had about thirty minutes to get us out of Kansas City before that entire place went on Civella lockdown. God knows I’d tried to run away plenty of times and never once made it out.”

Vicky surprised me. For all our years of being best friends and talking about everything, this was a portion of her life I was completely blindsided by. It was on the tip of my tongue to ask her how many times she attempted to escape her family.
