Chapter Thirteen

I’d managed to convince Kiki to give me Lee Tucker’s phone number and address from his customer file, and although I was dying to call him, I decided the conversation was best had in person. I texted Roman to pick me up a little earlier than agreed upon so we could swing by Lee’s on the way to the induction party. Unfortunately, despite the obligatory light on inside his cottage, no one answered when I rang the bell repeatedly. There wasn’t a car parked out front either. I was hoping it was because he’d also been invited to the party, but I wasn’t going to hold my breath. Disgraced angels were generally looked down upon, but they were also an anomaly, so sometimes it almost elevated their status among other paranormals.

The circular driveway outside Peggy Creighton’s mansion was already lined with cars despite the fact that we were thirty minutes early.

I waited for Roman to open the door for me before I stepped out of the car since he’d told me that was one of those rules that I, apparently, knew nothing about.

I had hoped Kiki would make it over in enough time to help me pick out a dress and do something with my hair, but she’d been stuck at Cosmopoli-Tan covering for an employee. Ember had curled my long, dark hair, mostly because neither one of us knew how to do much else with it. It’s not like my clients were requesting fantastical updos, so straightening and curling and the occasional pinning was all I knew how to do. I’d settled on a burgundy dress that was fitted on top with a flared skirt and black heels. Roman had said the event wasn’t exactly ball gown formal, more like summer wedding at a vineyard, whatever that meant.

“Do I look okay?” I whispered as we made our way to the front door.

“I told you, you look beautiful.” He leaned over when he spoke, and I caught a whiff of his cologne. He definitely cleaned up nicely in a trendy, tailored charcoal suit and crisp white shirt. He’d managed to look both casual and dressed up at the same time. He’d pulled his hair back in a tight bun and trimmed his beard. Never in my life had I been attracted to a man with long hair, but somehow he made it work.

“Good evening.” An older gentleman in a tuxedo was waiting at the open door to greet us with a tray of champagne flutes that contained a sparkling purple-colored drink. “Berry blitz champagne?”

I looked at Roman for guidance. Mystic Key had special drinks that weren’t available in the human world, and berry blitz champagne was a new one.

“Yes, thank you.” Roman took a champagne flute for each of us and handed me one. He put his free hand on the small of my back as we walked into the grand entryway.

“Wow,” was all I could manage to say. Peggy Creighton had one of those staircases most of us only ever see in movies.
