CHAPTER TWENTY

Jasmine slammed the door shut with a bang just as Spike dived into the hallway.

“What is it?” he cried. “What’s going on?”

“There’s a panther outside!” Jasmine exclaimed.

“A panther? But –”

The door rattled as the panther outside pounded into it.

“Fucking hell!” Jasmine shrieked.

“Where’s the back door?” Spike asked.

“Through the backroom,” Jasmine replied.

“Well, get out of here,” Spike said. “I’ll deal with it myself.”

“Okay, okay…” Jasmine said in a panic.

She ran into kitchen and looked back, to see Spike morph into his grizzly bear. He might be able to defeat the creature even if it was breathing fire, but there was no guarantee. Jasmine had frozen.

The door rattled again as the force outside charged into it.

Jasmine wasn’t sure if she should run or stay and fight.

Spike turned and growled at her, angry that she hadn’t retreated. Jasmine bowed her head and began heading round to the back room.

As she turned however, two more panthers burst through the kitchen window.

She screamed crazily as they jumped on top of her.

Spike bounded to her aide as the front door collapsed and the sound of more than just one panther entered the house.

The two on top of Jasmine snarled and lashed their claws out at the grizzly.

Spike swung back and knocked both of them off her. He scooped Jasmine up and ran with her into the back room. She then jumped through his grasp and closed the door.

They both ran to the back door, but found there were more panthers pounding out there.

“What are they doing here?” Jasmine cried. “Why is this happening?

Both the back door and the door they came in collapsed at the same time. Spike did his best to fend off the first three that came at him, but there was just too many. By the time they had both surrendered and were on the floor quivering, there were nearly fifteen panthers in the back room.

A path was cleared.

A man was entering.

Both Jasmine and Spike looked up at the same time to see it was the Arch Baron, Gaspar Travis.

“Don’t kill him,” Gaspar said to his panthers. “He’s still of value to us.”

Gaspar stopped in front of Jasmine and offered her his hand.

Spike growled angrily.

“Don’t worry,” Gaspar said mockingly. “I’m just going to borrow her for a bit.”

In a burst of fury, Spike sent the six panthers holding him down flying across the room and leapt up to Gaspar.

Out from the middle of his murderous eyes shot a red beam directed at Spike. When it hit him, Spike’s fur exploded into flames.

“No!” Jasmine shrieked. “No, no, no!”

Gaspar pulled her from the ground and slung her over his shoulder. He marched her out the backdoor and then set her on the grass in front of him.

Jasmine struggled to get back into the house but he blocked her path.

“Please do not resist me,” Gaspar said. “If you do then I will kill him.”

Jasmine stopped. Tears fell from her eyes as the rage burned within her.

Gaspar grinned.

“I don’t understand,” Jasmine said. “What do you want with me? I’m just an ordinary girl.
