In Haiti, we went out by vehicle a lot of the time to undertake needs assessments. It's important to get boots on the ground and build up a relationship with the affected population. You have to be very focused on what you're doing. You can't offer any direct assistance at this stage. You have to go in, explain what you're doing and get the critical information back, so the right resources can be deployed as effectively as possible. Haiti was quite extreme because it was a massive earthquake in a very underdeveloped country. It had a United Nations stabilisation force there already, which was the critical infrastructure managing the country day to day, and when the earthquake struck, it also struck that critical function, so it had a double impact. It was an extreme situation.
