On closer look

I saw that the pigeons were sharing a bagel.

That’s cool, Fernie said,

And the two of us walked our horses,

I mean bikes, into a park

Where a man in the smallest chair in the world

Was doing a magic trick before three squirrels.

The coin in his palm disappeared,

Then, seconds later, fell from his ear. He twirled the coin

And let it do backflips over his knuckles.

We applauded.

The squirrels moved on.

Boys, the magician said, give me two coins.

We plunged our hands into our pockets

And brought out a coin each.

He took them, this old man

In the smallest chair in the world.

He breathed on them, shined and gave them new life.

He brought them to his eyes

And then—presto!—they were gone.
