‘Is that your bike?’ I asked. It was painted black and the wheels were crusted with mud, but it looked like Dad’s getaway car to me.

‘Yes. I need it to get around the farm – I have to set a dozen rat traps every day. I have to cycle miles.’

‘Can I have a go?’

‘Catching rats?’

‘No. Riding your bike,’ I said.

She reached into the little leather bag at the back of the saddle and took out a spanner. She lowered the saddle so it was right for me. I set off down the road and pedalled hard to see how fast I could go. Then I turned back and pulled up beside red-haired Ellen. ‘Can I borrow it?’ I asked.

She shrugged. ‘It’s not mine. It’s the farmer’s. What do you need it for?’

I sighed. There was no point telling her. But she had a kind face. I thought she might understand. So I told her my problem.
