1917: THE TURNING POINT

31 December 1916 was a sombre New Year for the Triple Entente and the Central Powers, who were more mired in the war than ever. The expansion of the conflict had not yet brought any concrete results. Even worse, the great battles in Verdun and the Somme had only ended in carnage. Germany had seen over 800 000 men injured, killed or disappeared there, compared with 571 000 for France and 420 000 for Britain. In Italy and the Balkans, the human cost was no doubt far greater, but there was still a complete deadlock. In all countries, opposition to the war was developing and becoming structured. The war was running out of steam. In 1917, three major events would rekindle it: the United States’ entry into the war, the strategic failure of the Triple Entente and the total collapse of Russia.
