Being a soldier inside a tank was hard duty. The temperatures could rise to 122 degrees F. There was no air filtration system, so the soldiers were breathing carbon monoxide. Sometime entire crews passed out. Tank crews also had to wear helmets, goggles, and chain mail masks to protect them from rivets and flying pieces of metal that got knocked off inside the tank.
