Martin had a decision to make, and it wasn’t easy. A lot of people were counting on him to do the right thing. He left the men and went into his bedroom to pray. When he returned, everyone knew his decision without him having to say a word. Normally, Martin wore nice suits, but he was wearing jeans. He only wore those when he was going to jail. He had decided to protest.

Martin led fifty people in a march toward city hall; everybody was arrested within minutes. Once in jail, Martin was denied all his rights. Sitting in solitary confinement, he wasn’t allowed to make even one phone call. He knew Coretta, who had just given birth to their fourth child, Bernice, would be worried sick if she didn’t hear from him.
