World War I had been blamed on Germany when it had been the fault, to one degree or other, of many nations.

World War II was the fault of Germany, the Germans, and Hitler. Without Hitler, there was no WWII. Without Germany and the support of the Germans, there was no Hitler.

Since the end of the war, people have been darkly fascinated by Hitler and the Nazis. The evil of the man and the movement he led conjures up the worst nightmares of the human being. Not that we will be subjected to such evil – though, without watchfulness, we have seen evil arise in other nations and times – but that under the “right” circumstances of defeat, depression and despair, we ourselves could give ourselves to a cause that was evil through and through.

Hitler had bragged that the Nazi Reich would last 1,000 years. It lasted twelve. Twelve was far too long. If he had been resisted forcefully much earlier, perhaps the evil that consumed the world might not have happened.
