Saladin was a Muslim leader who is often remembered as one of the greatest military generals of the Middle Ages. He successfully kept Jerusalem under Muslim control, and he was known for his kindness toward injured soldiers.

The Magna Carta

King John ruled England from 1199 CE to 1216 CE. During his reign, people grew increasingly outraged as he continued to raise taxes and punish people without trials.

FAST FACT In 1215 CE, angry English nobles met with King John at Runnymede, a field outside of London. They forced him to sign a document called the Magna Carta.

The Magna Carta made the king less powerful. He could only raise taxes if a group of people called the Great Council agreed.
