Chapter 10

Marin’s eyes fluttered open as she felt the energy of someone staring at her.

Her hand moved instinctively to her neck, where the skin felt hot and dry, almost as if someone had taken a vacuum cleaner to her pores to suck all the life out of them.

She shot up in bed, her brain instantly on high alert for any predators. At first, she was surprised to see that she was alive. After so many close calls with death in a span of a few hours, she had figured that her last moments lying on the pavement were when the pain finally swallowed her for good.

But with the feeling of the soft, warm sheets wrapping around her body, she questioned everything. Was last night just a terrible nightmare? Was the entire apocalypse nothing more than a dream?

Those thoughts fast proved to be wishful thinking.

Standing in front of her was the one person that she least expected to see. His presence in the final seconds that she remained conscious in the chaos of the city streets was one that she wrote off as a hallucination. His long, curly brown hair and glowing eyes looked like nothing more than the manifestation of her desire.

She didn’t believe it was real.

But with him now standing right in front of her, his smile lighting up the darkness of the room, she knew that there was no way she was dreaming. Last night she had been taken away from her family.

And Rhett Powers was the person who kidnapped her.

“What are you doing here?” Marin threw the sheets off her legs, revealing the silk white gown that had been placed over her body. She felt an icy chill trickle down her spine as goose bumps lined her body.

She had never felt more exposed in her life. Even with her undergarments on, the thin, almost translucent fabric of the dress made her feel like she was naked. And although this wouldn’t be the first time she had bared it all in front of Rhett, she had a feeling that there were more than just him watching.

When she looked down at her body and saw that the cuts and bruises from the explosions had all disappeared, she knew that only one thing could have healed her.

The Chimera Cube.

And with that knowledge, she knew that there was only one place she could be: in the headquarters of the Syndicate.

“Shh, keep your voice low,” Rhett said, eyeing the door to make sure that it remained close. From what Marin could gather, she had been tucked into a queen-size mattress on the floor of a rather normal-looking room. The walls were covered in stone, with red curtains covering up the one window on the wall next to her. There were two doors that led out of the room, one likely to a bathroom and the other door to the rest of the Syndicate compound.

At least that’s what Marin thought.
