The Price Tag for Being Great

IT TAKES NERVE (AND A LITTLE SACRIFICE)

You have the right to do good work. When I wrote a column on this once, a retired government worker in Michigan responded, “Oftentimes there is a cost to wanting to perform at one’s maximum potential. Doing excellent work usually takes more time than doing a mediocre job, so my supervisors were always pressuring me to have my employees do just what was required to get by. I refused to ask my people to generate a product they could not be proud of, but that decision put an end to all further promotions in my career.

“However, I am satisfied with my choice, because I know I have given the taxpayers full measure for their dollar, and my standards for high quality were not compromised in the process.”

The people in your work world are going to do what they are going to do. If you can—like the man in Michigan—find a way to do excellent work despite them and accept the cost that may come with that, you will also find satisfaction in upholding your standards. If you cannot do that in the environment you work in, find a place where you can (more on this in Step 5).
