CHAPTER 5

“SANDRA, YOU PROBABLY think I’ve abused my position today. But I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with you.”

I was stunned. I hadn’t expected this. We were in the restaurant, in Berkeley Street, between Berkeley Square and Piccadilly in London’s West End. We had ordered from the menu, and were waiting for the first course to be brought to our table.

“I know this sounds crazy to you. I don’t know how I can convince you that I mean what I say.”

“David, I have a boyfriend already. And he’s very dear to me. I wouldn’t want him to be hurt.”

“Is it serious?”

“Yes, I believe it is.”

“But you’re not seeing him right now.”

“No. I told you. He’s working away from home.”

“Forgive me, but I must ask you this; my curiosity is killing me here. Is it Gary, over in the Paris office? Is Gary your boyfriend?”

“No!” I lied, trying to manage half a laugh to make my reaction more credible.

“I’m sorry. It was stupid of me to ask. I don’t want to press you, Sandra, but there’s one final question I would like to ask you. Until your boyfriend returns, do you think we could see each other? On a regular basis? You could treat me as some kind of substitute for him, if you like.”

I looked up and frowned at him.

“If you were having a healthy sex life before he left, I’m sure you must be getting frustrated while he’s away. I know I would be.”

“A substitute?” I asked.

“That’s right. As soon as your boyfriend comes back, then we finish our... arrangement.”

“Supposing he comes back for a weekend, when you’ve already planned something for us? Don’t you think he’s going to be suspicious if I can’t make it?”

“He would take priority, Sandra. Every time. I would always take the secondary part. The substitute, as I said.”

I would be taking a huge risk. I loved Gary; there was no doubt in my mind about that. But David had immense power at the firm where we both worked. If he found out I was lying – and that I was seeing Gary – his jealousy could find a way to destroy our careers very easily, if he wanted to, and I needed to protect Gary.

“Would you promise me one thing, David? This is very important to me. If I went along with your proposal, I want you to promise me – on whatever it is that you hold most sacred – that my boyfriend won’t be hurt, and that you will do nothing to damage our relationship.”

“I give you my word.”

“It occurs to me that, while you’re asking me to play a dangerous game, you are playing with fire, too.” I was hoping he would see that as a veiled threat.

“I hear you loud and clear. Nobody – but nobody – at the firm is to know of this.” Yes: he understood.

“All right. We’ll take each other on a month’s trial.” I could scarcely believe it when I heard myself say that.

He held out his hand across the table and I took it.
