Twenty-Eight

Jordan slammed the trailer door shut behind her and stood for a long moment with her back pressed up against the door, as if she could contain the demons that’d followed her here. She started with surprise at all the people. The tech guys occupied one corner. They’d kicked back their chairs, their feet resting on the tables, slinging down root beers and chomping on doughnuts.

And what do you know, Ned sat with them. He wasn’t exactly talking to them, but he also wasn’t holding himself aloof, either. He was one of them. He formed a part of their number. He sat at a table a little ways from them, working out figures on a piece of paper. Ricky, her mentor, sat nearby.

Then her gaze alighted on Ben. He sat with the extras huddled in another corner, playing cards.

Geezil Petes, this is just like high school.

And then her gaze focused on a person she’d not expected to see, yet there she sat, triumphant. Bethany. They locked eyes for one tense moment, then Jordan looked away.

Her first mistake.

Jordan sensed Bethany’s resentment boring into her skull.

Jordan wanted to sit with Ben, but out of her loyalty for her friend, she made a special point of heading toward her, but Bethany did not make any effort to clear a space for her in the cozy little circle she’d created, and Jordan stood uncomfortably to one side. She glanced up at the monitor above their heads. They’d already started filming, for grainy images flickered on the screen.

She flashed a weak smile at Bethany and the other girls who surrounded her. “Hi.”

“Hello,” Bethany said with a chilly smile.

“How’s everybody doing?” Jordan asked, to nobody in particular.

“We’re all fine,” Bethany said. “Unlike some people, who shall remain unnamed, other people from high school were only too willing to let me sit with them.”

She jerked her head in Ben’s direction. Ben craned his neck around and smiled ruefully at Jordan. Then, cocking his head at an angle so Bethany couldn’t see his eyes, he winked. Jordan let out a breath. Ben may have let Bethany inside the trailer, but she hadn’t fooled him. And at least this time, if anybody squawked about Bethany being on the set, Jordan could truthfully say it wasn’t her fault.

“Errrrrrrr,” Ned growled. “Ricky, I think your equation’s wrong here.”

“Oh, yeah, is that a fact?” Ricky took his feet off a table and stood up and walked over to Ned and placed a friendly hand on Ned’s shoulder. “Where’d I go wrong, my friend?”

Bethany giggled nastily. “Oh, hello, Nedster! I didn’t know you were working on House of Wax. Are you playing one of the dead people? You won’t need much makeup, will you?”

“Errrrrrrr.”

Ben stood up and faced her. “No, Bethany. You’ve got it wrong. Ned’s not an actor. He’s on the technical crew.”

“Oh, isn’t that a surprise?”

“Ned’s brilliant,” Jordan said.

“Well, of course he is. We all know how smart the Nedster is.”

Ricky gazed thoughtfully at Bethany for a moment, then his gaze cut to Jordan, who cringed.
