Goal-setting
I never used to understand the concrete benefit of âgoal-settingâ â at most, Iâd write a list of goals for the year ahead during the Christmas school holidays with a friend or two. Weâd write down targets to the tune of âget 2 A grades in mock examsâ, âmake the netball teamâ and âstop eating pasta every dayâ â and then weâd never address them again. (Also, NB, pasta is important and there is nothing wrong with having it every day.) More recently, Iâve found the practice to be a helpful, if sometimes tedious, exercise in deciphering what I want out of my time, and establishing parameters within which I can alter my daily and weekly processes in order to achieve something I wouldnât otherwise have identified. Iâve forced myself to incorporate goal-setting into my life, perhaps even too frequently, in order to establish better personal boundaries towards success, and address my new cumulative goal of engaging in micro-passions and self-actualising.
In my mind, goal-setting is all about marking a destination with a hefty pinch of planning â it is a science, so letâs try to get it right from the off. As with everything weâve discussed so far, thereâll be aspects of this method that work well for you, and other aspects that wonât sit well with you or your lifestyle. Try them all, and mould them to your preferences. As a general rule, the amount of time you spend goal-setting should decrease the smaller the picture gets. For example, you might want to set out half a day for your annual goal-setting exercise, but if you spend more than ten minutes on your daily goals, youâll start to push the limits of whatâs useful.
