Chapter 5. Basic Everyday SEO
Good habits that go a long way!
Anyone who has trained for a marathon will tell you that 90% of it is waking up and doing the same thing, day in and day out. It’s the process of adopting a lifestyle. And the winners are generally those who commit to that lifestyle more fully.
While producing content that uses good SEO is by no means a marathon, it shares the necessity for commitment. Consistency is just as important. However, while training for a marathon is, by most accounts, a difficult task, replicating good SEO practices doesn’t have to be!
The next two chapters are guides to producing great SEO-backed content consistently and easily. The first, this one, is a beginner’s guide to writing content that appeals both to users and to search engines. We’ll give you valuable advice on page titles, keyword use, and tags. But let’s start with the most important aspect of SEO content writing…
5.1 The Idea—Make it Fit!
Setting out to write a new post or page for your WordPress site begins with a single idea. But, like any idea, it often comes into being somewhat imperfectly. Like a misshapen lump of clay, it must be molded to fit with your goals.
For example, many businesses these days use blogs and content as a means to gain traffic. And while this is a great idea, it can sometimes go terribly wrong. The main way in which marketing-focused blogs miss the mark is by targeting trends in public discussion, rather than focusing on the goals of the organization they’re trying to support.
This can result in, say, a company whose focus is farming equipment producing an article discussing presidential politics. It doesn’t fit!
From an SEO perspective, this is problematic. It confuses search engines and users alike! The search engine may start lumping the farming website in with other political blogs. And when users who came for the hearty discussion of politics notice that the rest of the website is dedicated to tractors, they might be unlikely to stick around, and probably won’t be purchasing any equipment.
This is why focusing your content is so important. It helps to avoid confusing search engines, and helps to establish a coherence between all aspects of your website. It increases the likelihood that, when a user discovers one part of your website, he or she will discover something else that he or she likes – a win for you!
But how can we make sure the new content we’re creating matches with the rest of the website? With our keywords, of course!
When you have an idea for new content, ask yourself the following two questions.
1. Does it fit with one or more of my keywords?
2. If not, is there any way I can change it to make it fit?
If the answer to both of those questions is no , discard the idea. If the answer is yes , go for it!
5.2 Titles – The Most Important Things Ever!
One of the best ways to check if your idea fits with your keywords is to envision the title.
