“Welcome to Xochimilco!” shouted one of the boat operators, seeing the three kids standing at the dock. The man threw Eddie a rope. “Pull me a bit closer so you can jump aboard,” he said with a smile. Rosa carefully boarded the craft, then extended her hand to help Eddie and MJ. “I’m Ernesto,” the man introduced himself. “It’s your lucky day, because my boat here is the fastest in all of Xochimilco!”

The musicians from a neighboring boat serenaded everyone in earshot. For a second, MJ felt like she was on one of her family vacations where she didn’t have a care in the world. Then, suddenly something caught her eye.

“Eddie, is that Groucho Gary?” MJ nudged her friend.

“Where?!” Eddie replied, spitting a mouthful of corn out of his mouth in the process.

“On the next boat,” said Rosa, who was listening in. “He’s playing guitar in the band. The man in the big sombrero.” Eddie looked over and spotted a man in a gigantic Mexican hat with a guitar in his hand. Opening his mouth wide to sing, the man exposed his mouthful of crooked teeth.

“Groucho Gary’s singing voice is awful!” Eddie said, putting his hands over his ears dramatically.

“Stop!” shouted MJ. But it was too late. Groucho Gary had already noticed them.

“You kids think you’re so clever, but I’m hot on your trail!” Gary hollered across the boats.

“Ernesto, we gotta go!” said Eddie, looking back at the boat captain. Ernesto nodded and pulled on the rip cord of his little engine. The deafening sound of the motor drowned out all the chatter and music from the canal as the boat started picking up speed.
