It was a humid, vaporous after-noon and though in good humor, my wrists, my entire being, was aware of the approaching storm. In the corner was a cylindrical tub I used, inverted, as a table for my dorje, a traveling box, a silver offering bowl, and a small but very old butterlamp. I re-moved them carefully and wrapped them in cloth. Then I wiped out the tub, filled it with very hot water and brown salt and bathed a long while. The salt drew the pain from my limbs and after a simple meal of bread and coffee I brought out my sewing basket. It was my intention to make a quilt for my brother—a cowboy patchwork. But as I worked by hand, slowly and with little skill, he would most likely suffer several winters without it.

I enjoyed the task not only out of love for my brother but for each patch, for all were remnants of our childhood or some spirited place. The plaid of our shirts, my sister's dotted swiss, brown flannel from Nepal, satin moire from Robert's studio, gingham, velvets...each square transporting as a wild seed or a rare cup of tea. I confess, however, the undertaking made me drowsy and I drifted to a place that seemed more present than my-self, sitting, dutifully sewing as my fingers let slip the thread and joined my mind, elsewhere.
