3.1 Essential Woodworking Hand Tools
Woodworking hand tools get their hardness from your muscles. They are tools of power but not electrical power. A complete list of hand tools that every woodworker, cabinet maker, or carpenter should think about having in his woodshop is given below.
The Claw Hammer
Let's start with perhaps the most basic tool, the claw hammer, in every household. The claw should be well counterbalanced by the finished head on one side of the head, which should be rounded somewhat. The waffle-head is the other type of head. Most often used in construction, when you drive the nail, it leaves a distinctive waffle mark on the wood. This is not the right nail for woodworking, of course. In your hand, a poorly balanced claw hammer would twist, making this problematic to properly drive the nails. You usually grip the claw hammer at the back to grip with your hand, allowing the weight of the head to do the maximum work. So all you have to do is point the driving surface to the right nail, avoiding the ones on hand. The size of the most demanding claw hammer is 20 oz. It is heavy enough to drive nails easily, but when pulling nails, it is easily manipulated. While wooden handles are quaint, if you have to be pulling a lot of the nails, they may not stand up to the strain. There are stronger hammers with steel handles or even fiberglass. However, these will not absorb vibrations from the driving nails as a hickory handle would. For control and comfort, you'll also require to ensure fiberglass and metal handles also have a rubberized grip. The wooden handled hammer would also be good for reducing the stress on the hand and wrist if you're going to drive a lot of nails.
