Woodcarving

• Carving Knife: the very first tool needed when starting, used for paring, chipping, and whittling.

• Carpenter’s Chisel: used to peel simple curls of wood or for flat cutting and finishing.

• Skew Chisel: same as the chisel above, but has a 45-degree angle.

• Gouges: these tools scoop out big chunks of wood and can create deep or shallow curves and hollows.

• Spoon and Bent Gouges: these do the same as the gouges mentioned above, although they can reach places the straight gouges cannot because of their shape.

• Veining and Parting Tools and Fluters: parting tools are used for narrower cuts, veining tools are used for smaller areas, and fluters are used for wide curvatures.

• Palm Tools: these are the smaller version of the tools mentioned above.

• Riffles: a small curved file to smooth out the surfaces of carved areas.

• Mallet: usually used to hit the end of the chisels and gouges.

• Leather Thumb Guard: this will protect your thumb from injury when starting out carving.
