CHAPTER ELEVEN

They’d spent the rest of the night making love and savoring each other’s company. He delighted in her smile, her comfort in his presence. She seemed to be falling in love with him just as hard and fast as he had fallen for her. He was astounded that such a woman could exist at all, much less that she’d been delivered to him by some higher power, perhaps by the island itself.

But Paul knew the truth. He’d had long hours to consider the mysteries Lisa had mentioned. But where she had only questions, Paul already had the answers.

It was the orcas, he was certain. They’d ensured her safety out on the waves, as no sea creature could assault a pod of killer whales. And those incredibly intelligent and hateful wolves of the sea would know that she’d be the perfect bait to lure one of the lupes into an easy kill. Why they failed to attack him when he found her, Paul couldn’t be sure. But it seemed the only reasonable explanation for how she arrived alone and unscathed.

The threat of the orcas had to be endured in order to fish, which was a vital part of the Landrys’ lives. But the clams were in whirlpools in the rocky crags, and there he could find crabs, small fish, any number of delectable edibles. And though it was possible that Lisa’s father was indeed going to send rescue forces, it was just as possible that they would fail in their search. Lisa needed to know the ways of survival on the island. And Paul could not afford to leave her behind as he went fishing, lest his cousin or father or even his brother decide to make a play for Lisa’s possession.

In any case, her company was a wonder to him, and Paul wanted her by his side for every minute of every day. He wanted to go back to the cave for more conjugal bliss. He wanted her and nothing else.

But her presence did suggest other things that sent Paul’s mind and heart reeling. It was true that her rich and powerful father would indeed send a rescue effort, and it was even possible that the effort would be successful. The possibilities were almost too much to consider.

They arrived at the beach, and Paul pulled a broad leaf from a noni tree, then another which he handed to Lisa. “To collect the bounty,” he said, leading her to the clusters of whirlpools in the rocky outcrops that reached out into the ocean. The orcas couldn’t mount those rocks, the damage to their sleek physiques would be too great. It was just one way that the Landrys had learned to outsmart those clever devils.

Paul held Lisa’s hand as they walked carefully and she a bit clumsily onto the rocks. The water lapped up and pulled out, white froth and flecks of foam jumping up and disappearing to reveal new deposits into the pools: angel fish, a fine crab that wriggled its legs and snapped its claws at Paul when he placed it on its back in the leaf.
