Chapter 10

The Last Lesson

Grace began packing up. “So my parents think that I’ve been at some kind of finishing school? What did they do to keep the power going in my absence?”

Noah handed her a few pieces of clothing that he had brought her soon after their arrival at the cottage. He had insisted that she keep them since he didn’t have any need for her clothes. “I know a few people who were willing to help.”

Closing her eyes, Grace was afraid to ask. Still, she wanted to know. “Who did my parents think you were?”

“An assistant at the school. I wanted to say I was a teacher, but people tend to think I’m younger than I am. Even wolf shifters. So, I went for what I thought they would believe. It was also more believable that an assistant was running messages than a teacher.”

Grace was amazed at just how thorough he was at considering so many different vantage points. She muttered, “Absolutely amazing.”

“That your parents fell for it?”

“No.” She stole a look at him. “That you were able to consider all of that. You are incredibly impressive. Just thought I should tell you that as your student.”

He patted her head. “You are pretty amazing yourself. Given where you were, even Rosie couldn’t say too much against you.”

“What? When did Rosie see me?”

“When Lucas started telling people how much I had changed you, many of them didn’t believe him. I mean, an attractive young female, they thought he was just thinking with something other than his brain.”

Grace laughed, “I’m sure they wouldn’t be so generous if I said I wanted to stay with you.” The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them.

“They wouldn’t have any say in my decisions. Not if you aren’t dangerous anymore,” he said, and Grace felt her heart skip a beat, even though he sounded like he was saying it as a joke.

“But you are too smart to want to be with someone as selfish and reckless as me.”

“I never said that.” He looked up at her.

“I’m pretty sure you did,” she smirked at him.

He considered it, then said, “It’s a moot point. You clearly aren’t so selfish or reckless now. You did exactly what you were supposed to last week. Five blasts of air that gave Mateo exactly what he needed to make his move. It couldn’t have gone better. And you proved that you were emotionally a lot more controlled. That exchange between you and Ruby, very touching.”

Grace felt her cheeks flush. “How do you know what we said? We could have sat there quietly—”

“Ruby was nearly yelling when you told her that we were willing to let you die. I thought Mateo was going to give us away with how wildly he laughed at that.”

Grace thought of the things she had said, and she definitely felt embarrassed. “How much did you hear?”

“Oh, starting from when Ruby said, ‘I hate coming here.’ Everything after that.”
