Chapter Twelve

Xander

Things were feeling normal. Way too normal. It was like we were all in a state of denial that each day we woke was another day they might come and take Eli and me… or all of us.

Inside I was a mess of nerves, but I tried not to let it show. Every sound had me on edge and wondering when the second shoe would drop.

This time they wouldn't let me go if they caught me. This time they would kill me. I was certain of it.

I tied my shoes and stood, looking at myself in the mirror. The last thing I wanted to do was go to the Spring Carnival in downtown Arbor Falls. What I wanted was to curl up next to Eli and Ivy and try to forget about my demons.

"Ready to go?" I turned to Eli, who was typing away on his computer. He'd been at it since we woke up from a nap. "What are you doing, anyway?"

"Nothing." He clicked out of something as I slid my arms around his neck and put my chin on his head. "Just taking care of some things for my sister."

Unlike me, Eli wasn't so good at hiding how he was feeling. He'd been a shell of himself and moody most of the time. I tried to assure him everything would be fine, but they felt like empty words.

"Well, let's go gorge on fried foods and try not to vomit on the Ferris wheel." I kissed the side of his head and stretched, Eli's eyes going to the strip of skin that showed as I lifted my arms over my head.

"Let's just stay here, and I'll eat you." He swiveled in his desk chair and hooked an arm around me, pulling me between his legs. "Or you can give me a lap dance."

"Mm." I shut my eyes as he lifted my shirt and licked a line across the skin right above my waistband. "I don't think you'll be able to handle a lap dance from me."

He sat back in his chair and folded his hands behind his head. "Let's see."

A soft knock came from the door and it opened a crack, Silas poking his head in. I could have sworn I locked it. "Hope I'm not interrupting."

I backed away from Eli and turned to glare at Silas. It felt like every ten minutes he was checking in on us. Well, checking in on Eli. "What?"

"We're going to leave soon. Wanted to make sure you guys were up from your nap." Silas looked at Eli. "How was your nap?"

"It was good, thanks. We'll be out in a few minutes." Eli gave him a smile, his cheeks trembling ever so slightly with the forced expression.

"Don't forget to bring a sweater, it'll get a little chilly once the sun goes down." He shut the door softly behind him, and I groaned.

"What?" Eli raised an eyebrow. "He's just worried is all."

"What's next? A dozen long-stemmed roses?" I rolled my eyes and grabbed my wallet.
