Chapter 4

Ian woke feeling well rested. Looking over at his alarm clock, he was surprised to see it was after eight in the morning. He was normally up before sunrise and already patrolling the grounds before anyone else was up. He let his head drop back to the pillow, too comfortable to get up just yet.

Melanie had turned sometime during the night, and now had her back pressed up against his chest. Ian’s arm was thrown across her hip, holding her to him. She belonged to him.

Before she woke up and felt him poking her ass, he carefully moved away and put his feet on the floor. Looking back at her, he stretched and placed a kiss on her shoulder before getting up and heading to his bathroom.

Going back into his room, he saw she still hadn’t moved. Remembering how far she must have walked before he found her, he figured she needed her rest. Ian dressed quietly, pulling on a black t-shirt and jeans. He couldn’t imagine actually wearing any of the bright colors she normally chose. The guys would think he’d lost it if he ever showed up in pink.

Heading downstairs, he passed by Rafe’s office and stuck his head in and found it empty. Next he went across the hall to Devlin’s and found his baby brother working at his computer.

Devlin looked up, seeing his brother in the doorway.

“Hey, welcome home. Rafe told me you came home with your mate yesterday evening. Congratulations! Sorry I missed meeting her. I was at Charlie’s last night playing pool with some cougars,” Devlin said.

Devlin stood and pounded Ian on the back in a congratulatory manner.

“So ‘Cougar Town’ inspired you?” Ian mocked.

Laughing, Devlin said, “Not that kind of cougar, no. A few of the females from Chase’s pride showed up.”

Devlin caught Ian up on the news from their cougar friends as they went into the kitchen. He told Ian that the cougars were somewhat worried about Melissa since they hadn’t heard anything from her in a while.

“Since we both know Robert would never hurt her, I’m sure she’s fine. You know how time differs between here and Faerie,” Ian said.

“That’s what I told them, but they still can’t help but worry about her. Since she is their seer, they don’t have anyone else to ‘look’ in on her. I think if they don’t know something soon, they may come here to the pond and try to summon Robert. If they can’t reach him, then they may try one of the other fae guards. I was thinking about asking Lisa if she could use her witchy powers and see if she could find out anything,” Devlin said.

“That’s probably a good idea. Rafe already tried summoning Robert and didn’t get a response. Are she and Rafe around? I didn’t see them in his office,” Ian said.

“They went with Mom and Dad to Dallas. The folks can’t wait to meet Melanie, but I think everyone is trying to give you two some time alone to get to know one another.
