Holden threw open the driver’s side door. With his bear contained, he assessed Benjamin’s pallor. “Let me see.”

Bracing a hand between Benjamin’s shoulder blades, Holden eased his mate back against the seat. A sickly shade of scarlet soaked the right leg of Benjamin’s jeans. Holden’s bear roared again. Benjamin had lost too much blood. And from the position of the sun in the sky, Holden had been out cold for hours while his mate slowly bled to death.

“Too deep,” Benjamin grunted. “Can’t get it out.”

Holden soothed his right hand over Benjamin’s hair. The strands were silky but damp with sweat. “Will you let me try?”

“Not here,” Benjamin said, canting his chin at the road. Holden wanted to protest, but he knew Benjamin had a point. Standing naked on the side of the road in broad daylight would sure as shit draw the wrong kind of attention.

He was lucky the stretch of bumpy asphalt was deserted. There had been no stopping his shift. Just like before, the scent of Benjamin’s blood had triggered the bear’s attack mode. Benjamin, to his credit, hadn’t even flinched. He had no reason to. A shifter—even in animal form—would never harm its mate.

“C’mere,” he said, drawing Benjamin close. He maneuvered one arm under Benjamin’s knees and the other around his back. Lifting his mate from the front seat, Holden walked around the front of the van. Benjamin gritted his teeth but said nothing of his pain.

“My wolf,” Holden said, nuzzling the tip of his nose into Benjamin’s dark hair. “So brave.”

Benjamin let out a sound that could have been a scoff, but it was too muffled to be clear. Once Holden had Benjamin in the passenger seat, he fixed a stern stare on his mate.

“Stop that. I won’t hear it. You were magnificent.”

All the color had drained from Benjamin’s cheeks, but his sliver of a smile was genuine. “Why, Clyde, I do believe you’re hitting on me again.”

“You bet your ass I am. Now let’s get you—”

Something thudded in the back of the van. Holden went rigid. Flaring his nostrils, he realized Benjamin’s blood wasn’t the only metallic tang on the air.

“Oh, him,” Benjamin said, snickering. “I thought he might come in handy.”

Bewildered, Holden rounded the van. Jerking open the back door, he stilled. Tightly chained, Benjamin’s shooter lay prone on the van’s rusty floor. A mess of crimson clung to his mangled throat. He was still alive.

Clever mate, hummed the bear.

“You fucker.” Holden dropped his voice even lower, letting the bear shine through. “We’re gonna have words, you and I. Just you wait.”

Before he slammed the door, Holden paused. Amidst the array of hunting gear, the sleeve of a camouflage jacket peeked out of an overstuffed duffel. He rifled through the bag, pulling out a pair of pants and a black t-shirt. Neither fit him well, but at least he was covered.

“Very fetching,” Benjamin quipped.

“He was handy.” Holden held up a small leather wallet containing five-hundred dollars worth of twenties. Blood money, if ever there was such a thing.
