What they’re talking about is the recent sprouting of an idea that’s been germinating for at least 20 years in the compost heaps of feminist and Marxist political theory—the belief that science, and especially biology, is a political tool of the oppressors, mostly white male capitalists, and is therefore not to be trusted.⁴⁴

These words, penned by journalist Peter A. Jay in an article for the The Baltimore Sun, warned of the dangers of the resurgence of Soviet era anti-science ideology but could have been written today. But they weren’t. Jay’s words written in 1997, more than a quarter of a century ago, focused on a forgotten Soviet-era biologist named Trofim Lysenko.

Lysenko, a favorite of Joseph Stalin, rejected modern biology and genetics, including the existence of DNA, in favor of a pseudoscientific theory of heredity. Lysenko’s corrupt ideas were implemented by Mao in China⁴⁵ and are at least partially to blame for the Great Chinese Famine that claimed the lives of possibly up to 55 million people. Backed by a Marxist State, Lysenko silenced nearly all opposing scientific voices who cried foul regarding his false notions of inherited traits. Those who weren’t killed by Stalin’s secret police, known as the NKVD,⁴⁶ were stripped of their academic tenures and threatened.

As Jay mentioned in the article, the growth of the anti-science movement inspired by Lysenko (known as Lysenkoism) rejects modern science “as nothing more than a sexist and racist storyline created by Western white men.”⁴⁷ What Jay falsely predicted, though is that “there are limits to acceptable looniness” on the Left.⁴⁸ In this new age of “scientific” understanding, there are no limits to the looniness of the Left. Boys can be girls, gender is fluid, melanin levels determine the success of an individual, and experimental vaccines are more reliable than verifiable antibodies against a virus with a recovery rate of 97 to 99.75 percent.⁴⁹

In the absence of Stalin’s secret police, today’s Left must employ new enforcers of these biological Marxist ideas to silence naysayers and protect the fragile house of cards being built by neo-Lysenkoism. While it’s likely that the Left will continue to use greater and greater levels of force to protect their spurious beliefs, for now, at least as far as the church is concerned, they are relying on a different weapon: morality.
