CHAPTER 57

“Who is Vanity?” Aurora asked as she used her other hand to pick up a cup and tea. She tentatively sipped it and smiled, “This is very good. What is it?”

“Today I am serving Irish Breakfast,” Hugo said, “Please try one of the tarts. I made them myself.”

Aurora cocked an eyebrow as she put down her cup and picked up a jam tart. She nibbled it. “So this Vanity is really Ms. Wellington.”

“Vanity was once human. Now she is what you would call a hybrid. I suspect she is more demon than woman now.”

“And she has decided to use the class dweeb to take over the school? Why?”

“I have been thinking about that,” Hugo said as he carefully selected a jam tart, “I was confused at first but then I realized. The students are all in one place making it quite easy to charm them, but more importantly they will go home…”

“Taking some cupcakes with them,” David said, “She is using the kids to get to the parents.”

“Exactly.” Hugo said, “Then she will use the parents to get the rest of the town under her control. But that is just the first step. She has a bigger plan in mind. Vanity knows the green stone has been found so she must believe the other stones are here, too.”

“She’s looking for the stones so she can use them,” David said.

“I don’t believe the stones would allow her to become their masters so to speak but if she were to get to the other two stone masters first.”

“If she got control the Warlord and Witch Queen,” Alastriona said, “She would control the stones.”

“Max is the Warlord?” Julius asked with a chuckle. “I figured he’d be more…more…more than Max.”

“No, I don’t believe he is the Warlord.” Hugo said as he drained his cup and pulled out his pipe. “He is a pawn in the game. But let’s not underestimate him. I think Vanity has plans for him so she will give him some power.”

“You mean make him a wizard?” David asked as he finished his tea and refilled his cup.

“Not a true wizard. She will give him some powers and some magic items, teach him some tricks, but it will all be an illusion. As easily as he gains this powers they can be taken away. A true wizard is born with his powers and it is almost impossible to take them away. But more important. A true wizard serves. They care not for power or glory. They have higher goals.”

“Like Merlin. He worked to put King Arthur on the throne so he could bring peace to England.”

“Yes, the hope was to bring peace to world,” Hugo sighed, “But evil can be so creative. Who would have thought the queen and the king’s first knight would bring down Camelot.”

“I am so sick of people dumping this on Guinevere,” Aurora snapped as she let go of David’s hand, grabbed a custard tart and shook it as she talked, “I did a report on Arthur.
