Chapter 5
The Media Addiction
Over time there have been many media based communication distractions and influences introduced into our lives. Things such as television, radio, movie theaters, the net, mobile phones and many other factors have influenced the minds of both young and old.
The messages conveyed from media sources have consistently bombarded each generation with negative influences through violence, as well as promoting alternative and often extravagant lifestyles that our young people crave. All of these things were created by man, and have certainly negatively and dramatically changed the value system of mankind. I am not saying they are all bad, but they are obviously having a far greater impact on what we believe, and are certainly influencing the lives of children.
Let us look at the marketing and advertising strategies that many companies have adopted to influence people to buy their products. Most of these strategies have created a theme that it is all about “self.” Lines like, “Things go better with Coke,” or “Spoil yourselves by taking this holiday,” or “Buying this car,” or “Washing your hair with this shampoo will change your life.” “A Mars a day will help you work, rest, and play.” I wonder how many people really go for this stuff.
These are just a few examples of the information that is saturating our minds, and the minds of our children through television marketing. I call it information because that is exactly what it is. It does not mean that because it is regarded as “information” that it is completely honest and truthful. If there is any doubt these strategies work, then consider why large corporations are prepared to spend millions of dollars each year on promoting their products. In many cases annual company budgets are top heavy with advertising spending that far outweighs any other overhead that they may have. Continuous bombardment of in-your-face advertising brainwashes many people; especially the young fresh and easily influenced minds of young people.
If children are not in a positive relationship with their family then they are more likely to be influenced by what they see in movies and on television. It is also likely they are being influenced by the behavior of others whom they look up to, or hang around. Just have a look at the junk kids minds are being saturated with through some television shows and movies at the cinemas.
In case you do not think that there are many people interested in movies consider the statistics of ticket sales in one year. This definitely supports my observations.
In Australia in 2005 there were in excess of ninety-eight million movie theater tickets sold. With Australia’s population of around twenty million then, these figures would suggest that every person in this country went to the movies about five times in the year. In the United States in 1997, more than one billion movie tickets were sold. Compare these figures to the movie tickets sold seven years later in 2004 of over one and a half billion. You can clearly see there has been an increase of over 50% in sales of movie tickets in the United States.
