Chapter Twenty-Five
Reg was glad to be home. She couldnât wait to be in her own space again and away from the cops and even Jessupâs probing questions. She needed to figure out what was going on. Or she needed to get to bed. Something. As long as it was in her own cottage and she didnât have to worry about anyone looking over her shoulder.
Except there was still Etienne. Reg didnât really think about him until Jessup was a block away from the house and asked, âWho is your house guest?â
âOh.â Regâs face warmed as she remembered who was waiting for her. She wasnât even sure what she had told Etienne before she left. He would certainly be thinking that her behavior was strange. But then, he was used to Homo sapiens acting impulsively rather than sitting and thinking things over for a few weeks or months before deciding. Or years. Maybe it wouldnât seem any stranger to him than the typical Homo sapiens behavior. âRight. I forgot about him.â
âHim?â
âYeah.â
âAnd it isnât Hunter.â
âNo, it isnât Corvin. I already said that.â
âBut I still donât know if youâre telling me the truth.â
âThen why ask again?â
âI guess I shouldnât expect to get a different answer. So who is it? I thought you and Damon were sort of on the outs.â
âWhy would Damon be staying at my house? He has his own place. Iâm not inviting anyone over romantically. Thatâs not what this is. A friend of mine who isnât from here is⦠may be getting married. Iâm just putting him up and helping him for a few days.â
Though she still didnât know where she was going to put him. It would be better if Etienne found a hotel, since Reg didnât even have a pull-out bed for him to use.
âAnd what did he have to do with this business at the cemetery?â
âNothing.â
âA mysterious out-of-town visitor and itâs just coincidence that you stumbled over a body? I donât believe that.â
âBelieve what you like. Etâhe doesnât have anything to do with a mysterious body showing up in the cemetery.â
âWhat are we going to find out about his cause of death?â
âI donât know.â
âMaybe you could use some of your psychic ability to find out.â
âWhy should I? Leave it to your medical examiner.â
âDid you see his ghost?â
âNo.â
âHear it?â
âNo. I didnât communicate with him in any way. I keep telling you, there wasnât time for anything. You just showed up when I came across him. Like you were waiting to ambush me.â
âNobody ambushed you.â
Reg looked at her, eyebrow raised.
âWe saw your car parked at the gates where it didnât belong and stopped to see what was going on. We could see that you had climbed the fence and followed you in. Thatâs all. It was just a simple trespass investigation.â
âSeems a bit convenient.â
âWell, unless you told someone else you were going to be there, I donât know how we would have found out to plan anything ahead of time. Did you tell people thatâs where you were going?â
âNo.â
âThen we couldnât exactly have ambushed you.
