In September 2004, during a conference in Padang, Indonesia, together with my good friend and mentor from India Sebastian Painadath, S.J., I might have been a bit carried away:

It felt powerfully clear to me that I am Christ, that Christ lives in me, that my life is nothing else but giving Christ the opportunity to continue his Spirit and his way of life in and as me. This is what existence is all about. Whether there will be individual immortality, whether there will be a world that is one with the Reign of God, whether we will be able some day to resolve our conflicts nonviolently – it really does not matter. Just let the love and compassion and concern for justice that was Christ Jesus live in me.

“I don’t live” – what Paul meant by that, I think, is that if I can feel the living Christ living in me, then I will not be concerned about “me” ... As Sebastian put it during our long walk yesterday, let Christ be subject in me.
