CHAPTER NINETEEN

Dakota didn't hesitate. She darted forward, closing the distance. Mr. Burke screamed in rage, but as he flicked the lighter, her foot shot out—she had always been known for her kicks back in her fighting days.

Before he could set the room ablaze, her foot connected with the lighter. He yelled, his hand flinging back. The small, plastic device spun through the air. At the same time, Marcus burst forward. Burke stumbled, sobbing as he tried to catch the lighter. But it was far from his grasp. It hit the carpet harmlessly. He tried to lunge at it. But Marcus had reached him now. A large hand closed around the disgraced professor's wrist, holding him tight.

Dakota was breathing heavily, feeling a flush along her cheeks. She knew that had been risky.

Marcus was busy guiding Mr. Burke out of his library. "Sir, please. Stop resisting." Marcus was pulling his handcuffs from behind his back.

There seemed to almost be an air of reluctance as he did it. She didn't fault the big man. Somewhere between empathy and their job, Marcus had his own battles to fight. Now, shakily, wincing against the stinging odor of gasoline, Dakota glanced at the small lighter resting on the floor. She shook her head, and pulled her phone from her pocket. Hastily, she dialed emergency services.

And then, with quick motions, she followed Marcus back out the front door towards fresh air.
