The Biblical Meaning of The Strange Woman

THIS IS MY third visit to Japan, the home of the Seicho-No-Ie Movement, which means Infinite Life. It is headed by Dr. Masaharu Taniguchi, sometimes referred to as the Gandhi of Japan. The basic teaching is the same as that of the Laws of Mind, or Divine Science Movement in the United States. It could be called the New Thought Movement of Japan. New Thought in the United States is composed of Unity, Religious Science, Science of Mind, Divine Science, and Churches of Truth.

We went by jet to Osaka and then to Kyoto, which is one of the capitals of Ancient Japan. There we spent a thrilling time visiting the famous shrines, gardens, and palaces of graceful Kyoto. From Kyoto we drove to Nara, most ancient capital in Japan. We visited Totaji Temple with the tallest Buddha in the world, as well as the Kasuja Shrine. We had a “Bullet Train” ride from there through the picturesque Japanese countryside to the resort Stami and had the opportunity to see the awesome Buddha at Kamakura cast in 1252.

Tokyo is filled with exciting pleasures, including the Imperial Palace Plaza, National Diet Building, and Meiji Shrine. All of us enjoyed the tea ceremony and flower arranging at the famous Tea House.

It was in Tokyo that I got the idea for this chapter based on a question asked me by a student of Dr. Taniguchi. He was studying the esoteric meaning of the Old and New Testaments, and he asked me two questions: Why does the Bible talk about the strange woman, harlots, and prostitutes in the 7th Chapter of Proverbs? Why does the Book of Deuteronomy 23:2 say “A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord . . . ”?

I think you will find that the explanations given in this chapter make sense. Essentially, these were the answers I gave to this young seminary student, who will be eventually a minister in Tokyo: Wedlock in the Bible means a mental and emotional union with the eternal verities—that which is lovely and of good report. A false belief born out of real wedlock is but a son of a harlot, which means undisciplined or negative emotions. A bastard idea is a false belief or the acceptance in your mind of untruths about God.

When you pray, you must know your Father and Mother God; or, in psychological language, you must know the interaction of your conscious mind (father) and subconscious mind (mother). When these two unite in harmony and peace, based on the truths of God, the children of that union are health, happiness, prosperity, wisdom, and understanding. The formula always is thought and emotion; the result is either good or bad, depending upon the nature of your thought.

For thou hast had five husbands . . . (John 4:18). In Isaiah 54:5, you are told: Thy Maker is thine husband . . . The five husbands are your five senses. It is very foolish to allow
