ACT 4

Carelli leaned back as Rico drove. “Where we goin’ now?”

“Where’s Keene?”

Carelli shook his head.

“If he ain’t a fool, he wants to talk to me. And unless you’re a fool,” Rico pulled a .45 from under his coat, stuck it in Carelli’s ribs, “you take me to him.”

“Take a right at the corner, then straight a while. When you turn again, it’s a left. I’ll tell you when we’re close. And remember, you shoot me, a whole lotta guys comin’ after you.”

Rico nodded, got to the corner, turned. “When we met,” he said, “how’d you know who I was?”

“I guessed.”

Rico narrowed his eyes at Carelli. “Guessed.”

“I knew about Tenny’s money, knew your name. You’re the guy he uses for jobs like that.”

“So no one talked about me. But someone talked about Dust and the money.”

“I’m a reporter, Rico.” Carelli grinned. “I don’t give up my sources.”

Rico took his left hand off the wheel, cracked its knuckles against his chest. “But you sell information.”

“I only sell it if it won’t come back at me.”

Rico wasn’t patient. He asked questions to fill time until they got to Keene. He’d rather fill it with coffee and sandwiches. He’d rather go inside that house where he left Vollmer, see what was going on. “What you think goes on in there?”

“Keene’s house?” Carelli asked. “Or the one we just left?”

“About to find out what happens at Keene’s,” Rico said. “The other.”

“They got at least the broad. No one gets in uninvited.”

“We know the broad’s there,” Rico said. “Vollmer said so. You tellin’ me there’s made men inside?”

“It’s a safe house,” Carelli said. “Not sure how safe during this war. But it’s Keene’s.”

“So Keene has the girl. Maybe he got Dust too. And I can get in to see him.”

“Keene?” Carelli shook his head. “I didn’t say that, you did. You say it like we show up and he sees me.” Carelli looked at Rico, but Rico was focused on driving. “I never been his place without an invite.”

“Invite this, invite that. Berkeley’s too fuckin’ polite. That why Keene’s losin’ this war?”

Carelli shook his head. “Keene’s been doin’ this a while. What he loses don’t mean as much as what he’s gonna win.”

“He’s gonna win?” Rico glanced at Carelli.

“Territory he loses is hard to protect, not worth the effort. What he gains is close to his strongholds, gives him a stronger base.”

“Keene’s winning? Against Lee?”

“Lee’s gonna hit hard soon,” Carelli said, “try to stop it. Keene’s waiting. You picked a bloody time to come here.”

Rico stopped at a red light. “Everywhere I go’s a bloody time.”

Theresa and Jeremy remained huddled on the couch. She dreaded what might happen next but had to know. Maybe it wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen. Or maybe she didn’t know what that was.

The black man with the scar and the pistol showed no emotion, no interest, just stood guard.

Theresa looked up at him. “What’s your name?”

“Dumb question.”

Theresa knew it was. But Jeremy
