“What are you staring at?” I asked the black cat watching me. She was sitting by the door in my mother’s room, meowing all morning. Maybe it was because I’d slept so terribly, or maybe it was everything that had happened last night, but my nerves had gotten the best of me already, even though I’d only woken up half an hour ago. Even the sun streaming through the windows annoyed me. How could it be so bright, so early?

The cat meowed again.

“If you must know—yes, I’ve decided,” I told her. And I had.

Tonight was the night. I was going to go to that party, catch the witches who were causing trouble, and I was going home.

Not to this fucking monstrosity of a house, surrounded by people I didn’t know—but home. Where my friends were. Where my life was. It was all I could take. If I wanted to keep my mind, I was leaving tonight, no matter what. No more sitting around this place, talking to books. No more hating myself. More than usual. No more wondering.

I was leaving tonight. And I was never going back.

Another meow. I was tempted to throw my pillow at the cat. “Yes, I do remember my dad. I remember him just fine—but I did exactly what he asked. I learned magic, and I’m going to prove it tonight with those witches.” I smiled proudly. In those moments, it was lost on me that I was actually talking to a cat nobody else could see. “And maybe I have no clue how to get my phoenix to cooperate with me for the half-form, but I’ll get there. And I stayed away for two weeks—that’s more than enough time.” I’d given my father all the time I could give him. If that wasn’t enough for him, I’d figure it out. I would not live like this for a day longer.

By the time I was dressed and ready to go downstairs, I felt a thousand pounds lighter. With every step I took, my resolve strengthened. I’d made the right call. My instincts said so. My entire body said so. And my phoenix agreed. I could feel her pleasure all the way to my bones. She couldn’t wait to get home, either.

Maddy was already coming up the stairs, probably to wake me, when she saw me and smiled her best plastic smile.

“You’re up—good. Come on, breakfast is ready. Mr. Alinsky is still here, too. He’ll be joining you,” she informed me.

Surprised, I nodded. “Great—thanks. Go ahead, I’ll be right there.” If Arthur was here, I wanted to talk to him about tonight. I wasn’t going to sneak out of here no matter how much I wanted to—I was an adult, for fuck’s sake. Adults didn’t sneak out—that I knew of.

So, I sucked it up and went to his office, trying to quickly pick the best words to break it to him. It wasn’t going to be easy because I already knew what he was going to say.
