CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Breaking Every Rule

The next few weeks passed quickly. Belinda had been right. Adjusting to her final weeks of college life and developing her skills as a witch seemed to come naturally. She spent her days at the academy and in class, and her nights with Sebastian at her side. She’d all but banned him from using his cat form when the two of them were alone.

Gazing out the dorm window, her mind raced with anger and unease. Though her powers had grown exponentially, and she now understood the source of the magical massacre, it brought her little comfort. Dietrick Ward remained free, no doubt continuing to do whatever it took to gain more power. How many more innocent lives would be lost to his selfishness and greed? A creak at the door snapped Nyree from her brooding. Her roommate Anna entered, levitating a pile of spell books before her.

Nyree envied the casual elegance with which her friend wielded magic since she’d revealed her secret. She wasn’t sure if she would ever use her powers for everyday tasks the way Anna did, but unlike her, Anna had been groomed since childhood.

"Studying late again?" Anna asked, depositing the books on her desk.

"I learned something today," Nyree began slowly. "About the massacre of my coven." Anna's eyes widened. She drifted over to Nyree's bed and sat down, spellbooks forgotten.

"It was Dietrick Ward. He slaughtered them for power." Nyree's voice hardened. "And he'll keep destroying lives until someone stops him."

Anna looked down as if staring at her own hands. Then her eyes narrowed with determination. "We have to get support," she declared. "Make everyone see the monster he truly is. If we reveal the truth, other covens will turn against him."

Hope flickered within Nyree. "You already knew, didn’t you?"

Anna gripped her hand. "Of course. And we'll bring that bastard down, whatever it takes."

Nyree managed to smile, but it was the strategics of it that concerned her. How could she and her small circle of friends overpower one of the most powerful warlocks in the region?

Nyree rose and began to pace, mind racing. "We'll need proof," she mused. "Evidence of the rituals, the sacrifices. Anything linking Dietrick to dark magic." She paused before the window, gazing out at the moonlit grounds. Nyree turned back to Anna, jaw set. "I'm going to search the old coven grounds. There may be something left, some clue the council overlooked."

Anna looked doubtful. "That was so many years ago, Nyree, and anyway, it could be dangerous. What if Dietrick's wards are still active? It would be a perfect place for a trap."

"I have to try." Nyree lifted her chin. "I think my magic is strong enough now to detect his traps." She raised her palm, summoning wisps of blue fire. The flames danced across her fingertips, responding to her call and offering proof of the power thrumming in her veins. Nyree extinguished the fire with a flick of her wrist. She met Anna's anxious gaze. "I can do this," Nyree said firmly.
