Chapter 16

On my way back to the hotel, my wand starts to thrum in my pocket. I take it out, thinking that Granny’s trying to open up a communication portal. I duck into a small alleyway between buildings and use my wand to open the portal. To my surprise, it’s not Granny’s disapproving face with bright orange lipstick. It’s Wren, the woman from the other day. Her spiky black hair is a dead giveaway. “Bobbi!” she says. “Are you alone?”

“Sort of,” I say. “I’m in an alleyway.”

“Good grief, why are you in an alleyway?” she asks. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I say. Physically at least. I’m still pretty shaken up by Lady Severina’s threat, the realization that my mother enchanted the book and the fact that it was written by the demon king himself. “I just stepped off the main street to take your, uhh, call? What do you guys call it when you communicate through a portal?”

“Call,” she says. “No one can hear you? You’re sure?”

“I don’t know,” I say. “If someone cast a listening spell or has their window open, then maybe.”

“That’s fine,” she says. “I have an appointment with a customer in about fifteen minutes. Come to my shop right now.”

“Who’s the customer?” I ask.

“Sebastian Von Lavandula,” she says. I recognize the name right away. He’s the vampire who caused a minor scene after Binky kicked him out of the cafe. “At dinner the other night, you said you were trying to figure out who did the bombing. Well, he’s a likely suspect, don’t you think?”

“A radicalized vampire separatist?” I ask. “Definitely.”

I follow her directions and find myself at Monkey Business, the town’s pet store. I can’t decide if I want her to actually sell monkeys or not.

“Bobbi!” Wren says as I come in. “Get inside, you’re letting the cold air out.”

I close the door behind me and take a moment to wipe the sweat off my lip. And forehead. And neck. “Where’s your familiar?” she asks.

“I’m not sure,” I say. “Probably nosing around the garbage—I mean, gardens.” Not sure I want to fully admit to having a dumpster-diving fox at this point. Wren seems open-minded and accepting, but I don’t want to stretch her hospitality.

“Can you call it here?” she asks. “I just love meeting new animals.”

“Okay,” I say. “But she’s got a bad attitude some of the time. Most of the time.”

“They all do,” she says. “Even the banana slugs give you attitude.”

“There’s witches who have banana slug familiars?” I ask.

“Sure,” she says. “The familiar is not always a cat, as you know, though cats are best suited for the job. It’s like your wand. The familiar chooses the witch, not the other way around.”

“So you don’t sell familiars?”

“Do you really think that these sassy creatures would consent to being caught, caged and sold?”

“Good point,” I say.

“I sell other animals, though, for pets, and I sell all sorts of things for taking care of your familiar.”
