Chapter 13

I couldn’t stop grinning the whole way downtown. We had climbed into Rufus’s SUV. The interior smelled like him—woodsy and dark, like the spell hunter he was.

“I finally learned that you can mix spells,” I told him.

He shot me a side-eye. “You could have figured that out ages ago—if you’d come hunting with me, that is.”

“There was nothing stopping you from telling me yourself.”

“I just wanted to get you alone in a dark wood,” he said suggestively.

I had to admit that didn’t sound all bad. “Do you have any idea what kind of spells we’ll need to fight this creature?”

“No, and I wish that I did. We need to analyze the victims more, really figure out what’s happened to them.”

“You saw Willard. He gets enraged when you try to help him or even talk about Christmas.”

“Hmmm, so there is anger at the very depths of the creature’s work. There must be something there that’s important to survival, though. Why else would the creature do it? Why bother feeding off the Christmas spirit of people if that’s not what keeps it alive?”

“A lot of people hate the holiday season,” I reminded him. “I have the feeling that you might have been one of them.”

He smirked. “Just because I was evil doesn’t mean that I hated Christmas.”

I stared at him until he finally relented.

“Okay, I might have not liked it a teensy bit, but I wasn’t a Scrooge.”

“That’s what I thought.” We reached the downtown strip, and I spotted a parking spot. “Pull over here.”

We got out and glanced around. “Now where could Santa be?” Rufus asked.

“I think they normally set him up at a park behind the drag here.”

He reached for my hand. “Shall we?”

I slipped my palm over his and shuddered at the shock wave that electrified me from head to foot. I was grinning so much that I felt like a fool, a huge fool, but I didn’t care. My heart was full to bursting, and I wasn’t the least bit ashamed of it.

We picked our way through the street, which was packed with folks holiday shopping. I spied Clarice one street over. She had a deep scowl on her face.

“That’s the officer we first found,” I told him, nodding in her direction.

Rufus turned toward her. “Let’s see how she’s doing, shall we?”

I eyed Clarice like a hawk as we walked over. The last time we had spoken, she had been angrier than a hornet in the middle of August. I wasn’t certain if now she would be any better or worse.

As we neared, her forehead wrinkled like a prune. Yep, she was feeling sour all right.

My stomach knotted. Anger and venom wafted off her in huge waves. She just looked like she wanted to take a bite out of you for looking at her the wrong way.

I made my expression as neutral as possible as there was nothing inside of me wanting to be on the receiving end of her ire.

“Officer Forster,” I said barely above a whisper.
