Sully found Ofelia working at the bar later that afternoon. After leaving Blair’s place, they separated because his boss called wanting a face-to-face. He’d been vague when dropping her at Krewe and she’d spent the better part of three hours worrying that something had gone terribly wrong. If his smile was any indication when he hopped onto his regular stool at the end of the bar, that was not the case.

“Do you want something?” Ofelia asked as she wiped down the area in front of him.

“How about a kiss?”

She frowned. “I’m working.”

“So?”

“So ... my father is here.”

“So?”

She tried hard to keep her smile in check ... and failed. “You’re feeling full of yourself, huh?” she challenged after gracing him with a quick smooch. “That’s all you get while I’m on the job.”

“I guess I’ll have to live with it.” He offered a wink and then studied the specials menu. “Will I like blueberry ale?”

“Yes.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because up until now, you’ve liked whatever I’ve given you.”

“That’s a true statement. I’ll try the blueberry ale.”

“Coming right up.” Ofelia filled a glass and delivered it to him, checking her other customers before resting her elbows on the bar. “Did you get in trouble?”

“Trouble? That’s a relative term.”

Ofelia cocked an eyebrow. “Are you dodging the question for a reason?”

“It’s not really a dodge.” He scrubbed his chin. “Apparently Helen Sanders wasn’t a fan of us dropping in to question her. She called the chief and complained. He had a few questions for me.”

“She complained?” Ofelia didn’t know what to make of that. “Was the chief angry?”

“He was ... confused. I explained why we were there, though, and he was fine with it.”

Her eyebrows hiked. “You told him I was with you?”

“He already knew. Helen made sure of it.”

“Oh.” Ofelia wasn’t certain how she should feel but her stomach was edgy. “What did he say about me being with you?”

“He asked if it was Take Your Girlfriend to Work Day.”

“Did you make up an excuse? Whatever you told him, I can call and serve as an alibi.”

Amusement creased Sully’s forehead. “Do you think I lied to him?”

She shrugged, noncommittal. “I might have if I was in your shoes.”

“Well, I told him the truth.”

“How much of the truth?”

“As much as he needed to hear. He’s well aware that you were with me during the initial incident. I included it in my report.”

“Oh.” That settled some of the uneasiness rolling through Ofelia. “So ... he wasn’t mad?”

“He rarely gets mad, at least at me. He pretty much allows me to tackle cases however I want.”

“That’s good for you.”

“It is.”

“You’re not saying something.” Ofelia was good at reading emotions, and even though they hadn’t known each other all that long, she could read Sully better than most. “Did something happen?”

“He told me to be careful around Helen. I explained that I couldn’t guarantee I wouldn’t have to go back and ask more questions. When I laid everything out — he’s as confused about MLM companies as I am — he said that he trusted me to get to the bottom of things.
